Winston's Wish Sunrise walk 2011

Over 200 walkers embarked on our ten mile sunrise walks for Winston's Wish, the charity for bereaved children in beautiful sunny weather both in Gloucestershire and West Sussex.

Some were walking to remember the life of someone special, others were taking part as a way of giving back something to the charity which had supported them through their own family's bereavement, whilst some were kick-starting their new fitness regime; whatever their reasons the early start wasnt enough to dampen spirits as the lively crowd set off in darkness with glow sticks round their necks at 6am!

When the sun rose the beautiful weather kept walkers motivated to reach the end of the route and the lure of a hot breakfast helped too! Both event were an immense success and huge amounts of funds will have been raised for the charity.

'The exact total which has been raised by our wonderful walkers is yet to be finalised but we anticipate it to be over £30,000. If the walkers enthusiasm on the day matches the effort they have put into fundraising we know that they are going to make a significant difference in helping us to support bereaved young people and children,' said Sally Davies, Regional Fundraising Manager.

Walkers who took part have until the end of November to return their sponsorship and each person who raises over £100 by then will be entered into an exciting prize draw to win a nights stay in a hotel.

Anyone wishing to make a donation in lieu of the walk can do so through the charity's website: www.winstonswish.org.uk.

06/07/2011 - Rise, Shine and Raise for Winston's Wish 2011

Winston's Wish, the leading childhood bereavement charity, is encouraging men, women and children to get behind its flagship event, the Sunrise Walk this September.

The walk allows family, friends and colleagues the opportunity to take part in something very special, have fun, get fit or remember somebody important to them, whilst making a wish for the future.

Speaking about the event Sally Davies, Regional Fundraising and Events Manager for Winston's Wish said 'The Sunrise Walk has become a highlight in our fundraising calendar and is the only sunrise walk in Gloucestershire and West Sussex. Following on from the success of previous walks we hope that over 500 walkers will join us this year and raise an amazing £40,000 of vital funds for the charity.'

'The walk really is a unique event, from setting off with a colourful light parade in the dark at 6am, to seeing the sunrise just as you get to within an hour of your walk, the spectacular sights contribute to making this walk a breathtaking experience. We really hope that walkers will raise sponsorship to allow Winston's Wish to support more bereaved children at a time when they really need it' Sally continued.

Every penny of sponsorship raised will help bereaved children and their families. Winston’s Wish depends almost entirely on voluntary donations for its income to provide therapeutic help in individual, group and residential settings, and via a national Helpline, interactive website and publications.

'Why not get a group of your friends and family together, get your early morning dog walk out the way before the day begins or just have an awe-inspiring morning raising money for Winston's Wish. Whatever your reason, sign up today and don't miss out on an amazing event!' said Sally. This special walk has a £15.00 entry fee and each walker will receive a t-shirt, goodie bag and a well deserved breakfast at the end of the walk. Entry is strictly by prior registration at www.sunrisewalk.co.uk or by completing and returning the application form which is available from the charity by calling the Winston's Wish Fundraising Team on 01242 515157. Every walker who successfully raises over £100 by the end of November will be entered into an exciting prize draw.

' We hope to have around 20 members of GIN taking part in the walk and aim to raise several thousand pounds for Winston's Wish, a charity that all of us within GIN are passionate about supporting. The Sunrise Walk promises to be a fun day and one that our members are keen to bring their families along to as well, so we cannot wait to get attached to the rope and get started'.

The Gloucestershire walk will begin and end at Cheltenham Racecourse and will take a circular route, along stone paths, farm tracks and through rural terrain. The route is undulating, including several ascents and there are a number of stiles along the way around.
